A New Era for American Energy

By one definition, the Permian Basin is as big as the United Kingdom; by another, it's the size of New Jersey. In either case, it's a vast energy-producing region of Texas and New Mexico at the center of the global energy economy, accounting for more than 40 percent of U.S. oil and nearly 20 percent of U.S. natural gas output. More important, the region is home to some of the world's brightest research minds, a skilled workforce, independent, proud communities and plenty of land for large-scale technological experimentation.

These are the factors that inspired the Permian Energy Development Lab, a new collaboration among national labs, academic institutions, business leaders and a forward-looking foundation. The goal of the lab, which launched last month, is to speed up the development of advanced, clean energy systems, educate the next generation of energy professionals and support energy-intensive communities and the natural resources they depend on. We're proud to support this work and hope you'll take a look.
